Summer Skincare Routine Fails

Breakouts, sunburns, dehydrated skin, oh my. Your clients are desperately trying to find ways to recapture their glowing spring skin—so much so they could be causing more harm than good. Let’s look at some of the worst things they could be doing to their skin this summer, and how you can help get things back on track.


Fail 1: Not Wearing Sunscreen—or Wearing it Wrong

Your clients may not be wearing sunscreen at all, or they are adding it incorrectly into their morning skincare routine. From anti-aging to life saving, educate them on the overall benefits of applying sunscreen to their face every day—and what can happen to their glowing skin when they don’t. While applying sunscreen during the finish phase of their facial treatment, take the time to get real about the facts of practicing safe sun, emphasize the anti-aging benefits (fact: people who use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher show 24% less skin aging than those that don’t), and don’t shy away from the realities of skin cancer and melanoma. Also be sure to discuss an at-home skincare routine. As the finishing step in their morning skincare routine, sun protection is applied after their moisturizer, right before makeup. For added protection from the sun, have them use a vitamin C serum before their moisturizer and remind them to always use SPF on their lips too.


Fail 2: Over Exfoliating

It’s true, there can be too much of a good thing and chemical peels and exfoliating can definitely be damaging your client’s skin if done incorrectly. While exfoliating is the key to healthy, smooth skin, there are some tips to getting the most out of the treatment:

  • Remind them to never exfoliate in the morning. Peels or over exfoliation can cause damage in the sun because that layer of dead skins actually protects the skin from UV rays.
  • Don’t push it too far with peels. They really should only use a product with glycolic acid twice a week.
  • Understand where their dry skin is coming from. Typically, dry skin is caused by dehydration from water, not oil from the environment or their skin. Not drinking enough water or drinking too much can all affect how hydrated the skin is.


Fail 3: Not Switching Out Skincare Products

From cleansing to moisturizing it’s a good idea to recommend a summer skincare routine swap to products that are better suited for how their skin type deals with summer sun, sweat, clogged pores and acne.

  • Try a Deep Pore Cleansing Duo: Especially effective at night, a deep pore cleansing duo won’t strip and dry out the skin, instead working with your skin’s natural oils to draw out make-up, sweat, and pollutants. Recommend a product that includes a cleansing oil combined with an all-natural toner to thoroughly cleanse and gently exfoliate summer skin.
  • Swap But Don’t Stop Using Moisturizer: They may say their skin feels hot and sweaty, but that doesn’t mean it’s moisturized. Recommend a natural moisturizer to protect that outer layer of skin from harmful pollutants and chemicals while helping with dryness. Also recommend a vitamin C serum. This will not only brighten and protect their skin; it will treat any additional fine lines or dark spots that may appear thanks to additional time in the sun.
  • Try this for acne: If they are worried about summer breakouts, suggest they give their skin a break from heavy makeup and instead focus on taking a healing approach with their skin. If they are dealing with breakouts, have them try a blemish control gel or healing serum designed for acne-prone skin. Anti-bacterial ingredients will regulate oil production (which can increase in the summer) and promote cell regeneration.
